Dr. Sharique Athar Ali was born in Jabalpur, India on the 28th of December, 1957, to highly educated parents, Prof. M. A. Ali (M.A. English, Urdu, Persian, B.T.L.L.B.) and Mrs. Siddiqua Begum (M.A. Urdu).
Dr. Sharique studied Chemistry, Zoology and Botany for his B.S. from Nagpur University and got his M.S. in Animal Physiology from King Edward College, Nagpur University in 1978. He got the prestigous National Fellowship for his Ph.D., from BARC (Department of Atomic Energy, Trombay) and completed his Doctorate in Bioscience in 1983 from Bhopal University, Bhopal.
He was appointed as Lecturer in Physiology in 1983 at Saifia College of Science, Bhopal, became Assistant Professor in 1988 and Professor and Head, Department of Biotechnology in 1996 till date. He was conferred with the Young Scientist Award by Govt. of M.P. and D.S.T., followed by the prestigous International Young Scientist UNESCO Award in Environmental Biotechnology. He has successfully guided 30 students for their Ph.D., in Bioscience and Biotechnology, 8 more students are presently doing Ph.D., under him. He has more than 100 Publications to his credit, has completed 8 research projects of Agencies like USDA (PL-480), ICAR, UGC and MAPCOST. Many other research projects are in the pipeline.
Dr. Ali has published research papers in reputed journals like British Journal of Pharmacology (John Wiley & Sons), Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology (Blackwell), Phytochemistry, Cytokine, Viral Epidemiology, BMC Infectious Diseases, Food Science Technology (Elsevier), Cell & Molecular Biology (Verlag), Journal of Receptors and Cell Transduction, In Vitro Biology (Springer), Planta Medica (Thieme, UK), Journal of Experimental Botany, Environmental Conservation (Cambridge), Pharmacologia, Acta Biologica Hungarica, Natural Product Research, Pharmaceutical Biology, Bull Cont Toxicology (Springer), National Academy of Science (Springer), Current Science,
Experimental Biology and many others.
Dr. Ali has also written several letters of interest in science in The Times of India, Nature USA, Readers Digest, Current Science, Science Reporter and Environmental Conservation, UK and has also given more than one dozen T.V. and Radio talks on National T.V. & All India Radio on popular scientific topics. He has also delivered about 50 invited talks all over the country and in many universities in the U.S., U.K., K.S.A., Pakistan and Germany.
Dr. Ali has also filed one patent through NRDC, New Delhi and has also got gene sequencing credits. He has visited several countries like the U.S.A., U.K., Germany, France
and many others on academic assignments several times. He has successfully completed 8 major research projects in Biology & Medicine, including the prestigious (PL-480) U.S. Department of Agriculture, OICD International Research Program. Dr. Sharique Ali is Editor in Chief of an international peer reviewed journal, Bioscience Biotechnology Research Communications (BBRC) and editor reviewer of many international journals, member board of studies of Biotechnology and PhD examiner of various universities in India. Dr. Ali has achieved all these academic accomplishments being a teacher in a private government aided college.
Dr. Sharique is married to Dr. Ayesha Ali, Ph.D., CSIR Fellow, Professor of Zoology and has two well settled children.
